In this module we will cover:
How to build up the individual programme – and the programme series
In this module you will learn:
• To work systematically with a synopsis for programme planning
A synopsis is a brief yet thorough description of a programme or programme series. It is designed to give the reader an accurate idea of what the programme is about with all the required details in 1-2 pages. It is to create a basis for an efficient and focussed discussion of intentions and way forward.
A synopsis can be used for the work in your editorial group / collective, but it could also be used when making the first contact with the funder or a manager, as a basis for discussion and negotiation. Synopses are used when famous film directors/producers are pitching their project for major investments – or when a community radio is planning a programme, or maybe seeking funding for a particular programme series.
A synopsis is a dynamic tool, adapted to match the situation at hand while presenting and debating it afterwards.
Based on your work in the previous four modules, you will already now have quite detailed information to fill into the synopsis. When you have done this, you have a good and flexible tool for your continued discussion, to plan for whichever modifications you want to make – AND for sharing it with colleagues in your station.
The basic components of a Synopsis are as follows – but of course if you wish to add some additional elements, do so:
<aside> 💡 Synopsis for a Public Health Programme Series
1. Objective (What is the overall goal, the vision you wish to realise?)
2. Target group(s) (Primary, Secondary, Others)
3. Outcomes foreseen: What results are hoped for in the lives of your target group(s) from participating in – and listening to - the programmes? Describe the changes desired with as much detail as possible.
4. Duration proposed, timing: for example: Duration of programme series and individual programme /spot. For instance: each programme is of a 45-minute duration. The series is expected to run for half a year to begin with. Thereafter we will evaluate a possible way forward. The programme will appear weekly.
5. Languages – which languages will you use. Any multi-lingual plans?
6. Programme format (s)
7. Production outline proposed: Thematic content ideas for programme series and for the individual programmes: how will you build up the changed understanding you are seeking in your target group(s)?
8. Activities involved:
Please develop an action plan (separately) with date, action, responsible person(s), any external engagement, etc
9. Expenses related to activity per above activities
