How to plan for a public health programme in your station
- How is your community made up? Who are your audiences?
- Map your community: identify the many sub-communities there are
Generic groupings include women and men, youth and elderly; but also different ethnic or religious groups are important, as well as different livelihood or professional groups, and special profile neighbourhoods: disadvantaged, affluent or other.
- Each of these groups will have its own specific context (traditions, rules, challenges, vulnerabilities etc.), hopes and interests as well as resources and possible contributions to make.
- You can consider making a physical map if this helps remember all.
- Select the one or two target groups you should like to focus on for a beginning.
Identifying the public health needs of your audiences requires organisation of some group discussions with representatives of the group(s).
Your questions to the selected groups could include – among others:
- Identify the group (include: age, sex, ethnicity, religion, socio-economic profile) and where in your community they live;
- Where do they normally get their information from?
- Which channels and programme types do they prefer? Why?
- Which information sources do they trust?
- Where do they get their (public) health information from?
- How would they describe their health challenges, needs, and concerns?
- Do they have access to sufficient and good quality health information?
- If, where do they get it from?
- If not, what are they missing?
